Music Promotion: Managing your Press Release

Asking the right questions...


The press release gives you a great opportunity to promote yourself in a big way. However, you must be very careful, for the line between a news release and spam is a thin one. For example, the press release for your bands new CD would not be considered real news to the world at large. So ask yourself the question, who does care about your new CD? Your fans might... so a news release would be appropriate for them, but not for the world in general. “Who cares?” is a good test to determine whether or not your news item is worthy of widespread distribution.

Here are some real life examples;

When I release my brand new CD, who cares? My fans do, so the news release would be sent only to them. When our Midnight Rain Label releases a CD sampler of piano music, who cares? Piano music fans do. So the press release would be sent to any newsgroup where piano music is a topic of interest, as well as any piano related music sites that host advertising or solicit news releases. If I have an email mailing list of interested visitors, they might be appropriate as well.

When we release a new edition of this study, who cares? Pretty much any working musician would, as well as the music industry as a whole, so the press release would be sent to the appropriate music newsgroups, music sites, online music zines and so on.

When formulating your press release, it’s important to know who your audience is. Your audience has to want the information or you’re crossing the line into the world of spam.

So, where do you send your press releases? Here are a few places to start:

RainMusic.com is the home page for Midnight Rain Productions and we’re always interested in news if it is useful to independent musicians as an audience.

Harmony Central is arguably the most popular music news site on the Internet. With over 70,000 visitors per day getting your press release listed here should be your top priority.

Gajoob is another of the major Indie sites which solicit news items. Gajoob is also interested in your personal band sites and CD release information so don’t be afraid to submit it to them.

Guitar Nine Records is one of the more successful music collaboration services on the net today. G9 is a high-traffic site, making it a worthwhile place to post your ad.

Kathode Ray is another highly visible Indie Music site. There are three options you should look into here. First, take advantage of their free classified ads. Secondly, you can post a notice (if appropriate) to their IndieBoard. Kathode also manages an Indiebiz mailing list which you may want to post an announcement to. To subscribe, go to http://www.onelist.com and search for “Indiebiz”.

The Musician’s Network: Submit your release to their bulletin board.

Music Connection Magazine is one of the biggest classified ad services for musicians. Take advantage of their free classifieds.

And if you’re hungry for more, check out
The Mother of All Classified Ads site.

The Internet News Bureau also offers a service to send your press release or web site announcement to 1200 online media professionals. These include such sources as the NY Times, USA Today, a multitude of computer periodicals, newspapers, online magazines and others. The cost? $225, which is a good price for that kind of coverage. You can target Arts & Entertainment newspapers for $125.
